Sweet vHMKClass-Action Suit Proposed Settlement
The Government of Canada, like every other government and private sector organization in the world, faces ongoing and persistent cyber threats.
In August 2020, the Government of Canadatook actionin response to “credential stuffing” attacks mounted on theGCKeyservice and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)accountsand aclass-action lawsuit wascommencedagainst the Canada Revenue Agency and the Government of Canada.The Federal Court certified the Sweet Class Actionin August 2022.
The governmentprovidedinformationregardingthe class action along with information on how tooptout of the class actionthrough Canada.ca.Government departments also sent out direct notificationto individuals believed to have beenimpacted.
In October 2025, both parties reachedagreement on a proposed settlement and a hearing before theFederalCourt will be held onMarch 31,2026,for thecourt to approve the proposed settlement.Informationregardingtheproposed settlement, the settlement approval hearing, and the second opt-out periodarepublicly available onCanada.ca.
