Today, in the Superior Court of Quebec, Gerald Nicolas was sentenced to five years imprisonment for leaving Canada with intent to facilitate terrorist activity, and for having facilitated such activity. On March 12, 2025, a jury found him guilty of all charges.
In 2020-2021, Mr. Nicolas, through various means, tried to incite an armed revolution aimed at overthrowing the Haitian government of President Jovenel Moïse. He travelled to the Dominican Republic and Haiti to put his plan in motion. Mr. Nicolas tried to obtain firearms for his plan, recruited persons to join his movement, provided funds to persons to assist in his revolutionary plan, and leased land near the border in order to set up a base of operations.
Director of Public Prosecutions George Dolhai said, “This case concerned a conspiracy aimed at undermining the stability of a foreign government. Anyone prepared to take steps to incite armed conflicts to pursue their objectives, whether in Canada or abroad, will be brought to justice.”
