Arzeda to Lead Major NSF-Funded Initiative Advancing Cell-Free Manufacturing Through AI-Designed Enzymes

Consortium project totaling nearly $6.3 million broadens the economic reach of sustainable biomanufacturing

Arzeda, The Protein Design Company™, today announced it has been selected to lead a highly competitive U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) award as part of NSF's Use Inspired Acceleration of Protein Design (NSF USPRD) initiative. The award, totaling approximately $6.3 million, will harness Arzeda's Intelligent Protein Design Technology™ to unlock industrial-scale cell-free biomanufacturing across multiple sectors.

Arzeda to lead $6.3M NSF consortium to scale sustainable cell-free manufacturing with AI-designed enzymes.

“Cell-free manufacturing has long promised faster, cleaner production, but until now it has been constrained by the capabilities of natural enzymes,” said Alexandre Zanghellini, Ph.D., cofounder and CEO of Arzeda. “By combining our generative AI enzyme design platform with these new NSF resources, we will remove those constraints. This will unlock scalable, cost-effective enzyme cascades that were previously impossible and open markets an order of magnitude larger than today.”

Transforming Cell-Free Manufacturing

— Unlocking New Chemistry: Arzeda will design high-performance enzymes that work with cost-effective, highly stable non-natural cofactors. This enables reactions that were previously uneconomic in cell-free systems.

— Scaling Sustainable Production: By addressing key cost and stability barriers, the project will expand the range of products that can be made cell-free, from bio-based materials to specialty chemicals.

— Proven Track Record: Arzeda's ViaLeaf™ Reb M natural sweetener already demonstrates cell-free biomanufacturing at commercial scale (500 MT/yr), providing a strong foundation for the new work.

Collaborative Ecosystem

Under the award, Arzeda will lead a consortium of leading academic institutions, including Stanford, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of California, Irvine, and University of California, Davis. The multidisciplinary team will integrate AI-driven protein design, high-throughput testing, and advanced bioprocess engineering to propel cell-free technology toward widespread industrial adoption.
