Today, Students for Fair Admissions announced the launch of a new website, KamehamehaNotFair.org, dedicated to ending Hawaii's Kamehameha Schools' unlawful admissions policy that favors students based on Native Hawaiian ancestry.
As the website notes, “Kamehameha Schools has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence. But its admissions policy is rooted in ancestry discrimination. It is virtually impossible for a non-Native Hawaiian child to be admitted, regardless of merit or need. That is neither fair nor legal, and SFFA is committed to challenging this policy in court.”
The new website provides parents and students with an opportunity to share their stories if they have been denied admission to Kamehameha, or if they feel discouraged from even applying due to the school's race-based policy. By collecting these accounts, SFFA seeks to highlight the human cost of this discrimination and build a legal case to ensure equal treatment for all applicants.
Founded in 2014, Students for Fair Admissions is a nonprofit membership organization of more than 19,000 students, parents, and others who believe that racial and ethnic classifications in admissions are unfair, unnecessary, and unconstitutional. SFFA successfully led the landmark cases Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvardand Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina, in which the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the use of race in college admissions.
