Hospitality Stands Out for Gender-Neutral Scheduling Flexibility: OysterLink Analysis

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as analyzed by OysterLink, men and women in the leisure and hospitality sector report virtually identical access to flexible schedules: 27.6% for men and 27.5% for women.

This near-equality sets hospitality apart from many other industries, where men are more likely than women to report having flexible schedules. For example, in education, 21% of men reported flexible schedules compared with only 10.1% of women. In management roles, 47.7% of men reported having flexibility, compared with 43% of women.

“Flexibility is one of the strongest advantages of a career in hospitality,” said Milos Eric, co-founder and general manager of OysterLink. “Whether you're a student, a parent, or someone balancing multiple responsibilities, hospitality jobs allow workers of all backgrounds and sexes to find a schedule that works for them.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that 27.6% of workers overall in the leisure and hospitality sector report flexible schedules, a rate higher than in manufacturing (24%), education (23.9%), and healthcare and social assistance (26%). Within the hospitality industry, both accommodation and food services workers benefit, with 28% of men and 27.1% of women reporting flexibility.

This finding highlights the hospitality industry's commitment to supporting a diverse workforce. From restaurants to hotels, the ability to work evenings, weekends, or nontraditional shifts provides opportunities that many other fields do not.
