Mayo Clinic in Florida designated as Cavernous Malformation Clinical Center

Mayo Clinic in Florida has earned the designation of CCM Clinical Centerfor its expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cavernous malformation (CCM), a rare blood vessel disorder that can cause strokes and seizures in an estimated 9,000 affected Floridians. A diagnosis of CCM requires specialty care, as brain or spinal cord surgery is the only treatment for CCM to date. CCM is also known as cavernoma or cavernous angioma.

“We are pleased to recognize Mayo Clinic in Florida for its commitment to providing expert care to individuals diagnosed with cavernous malformation,” said Connie Lee, CEO of the Alliance to Cure Cavernous Malformation. “We welcome Mayo Clinic in Florida to our growing network of designated CCM Clinical Centers and Centers of Excellence that offer knowledgeable, multi-disciplinary care to CCM patients across the U.S.”

In addition to neurology and neurosurgery, the CCM Clinical Center team includes experts in epileptology, genetics, neuroradiology, dermatology, and neuro-ophthalmology. Patients can call 904-953-0856 to schedule a consultation with the CCM Clinical Center at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

“Mayo Clinic in Florida is excited to receive the designation of CCM Clinical Center,” said Lindsy Williams, M.D., cerebrovascular neurology division director and assistant professor of neurology at Mayo Clinic in Florida. “We are proud to offer in-depth expertise that enables us to provide comprehensive, individualized care for our CCM patients.”

Williams, along with Rabih G. Tawk, M.D., professor of neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida, will lead the new CCM Clinical Center at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

CCM Clinical Centers are part of the national 21-hospital “CCM Center” network recognized by the Alliance to Cure Cavernous Malformation to address delayed diagnoses and poor surgical outcomes in CCM patients.
