IEHP was among hundreds of regional and global institutions recognized by the Redlands-based tech giant at its annual Esri User Conferenceheld July 14-18 in San Diego. IEHP earned Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) recognition for its approach to handling large member and provider population data using ArcGIS and Power BI platforms. The health plan was one of 12 winners in the state and the only organization within the Hospitals and Health Systems Industry category to win a SAG.
It is the third time since 2018 that IEHP has earned recognition from Esri for its efforts to adopt GIS technology advancement in everyday business practices.
“This award is a reflection of how well supported we are by the organization from the top down,” said IEHP Informaticist Eric Dick. “Our work would not be possible without the support from our leadership.”
IEHP used Power BI's mapping visualization technology to build interactive maps that show member population density and patient-to-provider ratio throughout the health plan's service areas. Maps were used to support the organization's practices when implementing programs and services.
“Since we have a large member population, certain maps cannot handle 1.5 million pieces of people data on it,” said IEHP Informaticist Darren Moser. “But our team was able to develop an Extract, Transform, Load-or ELT-process that can handle this large population data. Using a tile mosaic hexagon tool, we can show the density of where our members live and simply adjust data as needed.”
The future use of GIS technology within health plan operations will continue to grow. Both Moser and Dick are part of efforts to educate the plan on what the technology can do and new options available as advancements are made.
“We are looking into other technologies as well, such as artificial intelligence, to implement some of our other applications and solutions,” Dick said. “As technology continues to progress, we continue to look for new ways to integrate it into GIS solutions.”
