Thousands of quilt block submissions are needed to create a commemorative blanket of prodigious proportions
Visit Williamsburg is sew excited to bring the nation together one stitch at a time with The Great American Birthday Quilt Project. To commemorate America250 and VA250, the organization has issued a call for people nationwide to use their creativity to craft panels that depict their personal stories celebrating American pride, history and hope. The goal is to collect thousands of panels for America's birthday and anyone, from school children to senior citizens, are highly encouraged to submit. No sewing skills are needed-just some fabric, glue and an inspired design. Quilt blocks can be submitted to Visit Williamsburg now through the end of 2025.

The project is a collaborative effort being led by Steve Prince, Director of Engagement and Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary, in partnership with Visit Williamsburg, the destination marketing organization for Yorktown, Jamestown, and Williamsburg, Virginia. As America approaches its 250th anniversary, there is no destination more fitting to honor this milestone and proudly display this quilt than the Historic Triangle. This area of Virginia is where the first permanent English settlement was established and where the final major battle of the American Revolution was fought.
“We are moved by the heartfelt submissions that we have already received and stitched into the spirited quilt from participants across the United States-each telling a unique story of American pride, from honoring ancestors to celebrating communities and imagining the future,” says Edward Harris, Chief Executive Officer of Visit Williamsburg. “We're renewing the call for more contributions and would love to see schools, civic groups, clubs and individuals from around the nation participate.”
This is a chance to be part of history, as the completed quilt will debut in Spring 2026 and be on display at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center following a public exhibition at historic sites across the nation. From the quilt unveiling to colonial reenactments, cultural exhibits, archeological digs, concerts, art festivals and more, the Historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown will be a hotspot for America250 and VA250 events.
Submissions for The Great American Birthday Quilt will be accepted now through December 31, 2025. For more details on the project, please visit https://www.visitwilliamsburg.com/america250-birthday-quilt/
