Gallatin AI, a defense technology company transforming military logistics through artificial intelligence, was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) Phase I contract by the Air Force Materiel Command's Digital Transformation Office (DTO). Over a six-month period of performance, Gallatin aims to investigate the feasibility of leveraging generative AI to accelerate military logistics decision making and execution in the context of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR).

Predictive Logistics forHADR
The effort will explore novel generative AI approaches to improve near-real time data visibility, precision in supply demand forecasting, and accelerate decision making in military supply distribution operations. This is especially important in the context of HADR missions, as natural disasters, damage to infrastructure, and public health crises present logistical challenges akin to major combat operations, such as food and water distribution, medical support, evacuation, and infrastructure restoration.
Gallatin's AI-native platform, Navigator, will serve as the centerpiece of the project. Navigator augments military logisticians' capacity to predict, plan, and execute complex operations, notably during large, unpredictable crises affecting vulnerable civilian populations. Saving lives, alleviating suffering, and supporting recovery efforts in the wake of such events requires the military to rapidly deploy to disaster areas, make material demand estimates, and coordinate resupply and relief efforts under tight time, distance, and environment constraints. Navigator addresses these challenges by accelerating resupply workflows through real-time data integration, AI-generated courses of action, and simulation capabilities – enabling logisticians to provide critical relief through predictive analytics and automated decision support.
“Gallatin is taking its first of many steps in our mission to modernize military logistics and empower servicemembers to succeed in their most complex missions,” said Woody Glier, CEO of Gallatin. “Our work with DTO will serve as an example of how Navigator's dual-use technology enhances logisticians' ability to meet any logistics mission, be they combat, or while providing lifesaving humanitarian aid when unforeseen disasters strike.”
Support to An Enduring Mission Set
In 2024 alone, the Department of Defense (DoD) deployed thousands of servicemembers from active duty and National Guard units to both support HADR training events, namely multinational joint exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2024, and during real-world response to disasters, most notably relief efforts to those impacted by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
Gallatin doesn't plan to go it alone during its work, understanding that rapid experimentation and development requires early teaming with potential customers. “Great code and a dedicated team are table stakes in creating real value in the defense technology space, but they can only get you so far,” said Brian Ballard, Gallatin's Chief Product Officer. “Our approach is data-first, user-centric – that's why we're partnering with multiple military logistics units throughout the Joint Force to ensure we enhance Navigator with the raw data and experiences of past HADR missions to build capabilities of the future.”
This award will further advance Gallatin's expansion in both its technology development and contract capture journey, as the company continues to add capability to its Navigator platform for multi-mission logistics and sustainment. Gallatin is actively hiring in both its Washington, DC, and El Segundo, California offices.
