Diabetes nonprofit marks 10th anniversary with eighth annual marathon team, uniting people with type 1, type 2, and caregivers to raise awareness and funds
Beyond Type 1, the global nonprofit changing what it means to live with diabetes, today announced the 2025 Beyond Type Run team. More than 50 runners, including people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and caregivers, will take on the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 2. Now in its eighth year, the program highlights real stories of strength, visibility, and what it truly means to thrive with chronic illness.

This year's team includes runners from across the U.S. and around the world, including first-time marathoners, seasoned athletes, and everyone in between. Each brings a unique story, but all are united by one goal: to prove that anything is possible beyond the diagnosis. Running a marathon requires balancing physical exertion with blood sugar management and fueling strategies-a challenge that people living with diabetes turn into a powerful proof of strength.
Since its launch in 2017, Beyond Type Run has brought more than 200 runners with type 1 diabetes to the TCS New York City Marathon. In 2023, the team expanded to include people with type 2 diabetes and their caregivers, reflecting the full scope of the community that Beyond Type 1 serves. Together, these runners have raised critical funds while building awareness and challenging stigma.
“This year marks Beyond Type 1's 10th anniversary, a decade of redefining what's possible for people living with diabetes,” said Deborah Dugan, CEO of Beyond Type 1. “Our 2025 Beyond Type Run team is running for every person impacted by diabetes, pushing past barriers, and showing the world that life with this illness has no limits. Together, we're raising visibility and helping build a future where no one faces diabetes alone.”
This year's team is chaired by Phil Southerland, CEO of Team Novo Nordisk and a longtime champion for the diabetes community. A world-class athlete and advocate, Phil brings personal experience and global perspective to the team, helping lead Beyond Type Run's efforts to raise $1 million in support of people impacted by diabetes.
With more than 589 million adults, or 1 in 9 people, living with diabetes globally, and over 38 million Americans impacted, the need for awareness, access, and connection has never been greater. Each Beyond Type Run team member commits to raising a minimum of $5,000 to support Beyond Type 1's work, which includes a variety of programs that provide education, practical tools, community connection, and direct funding. These efforts help people with diabetes live well today and build a better future.
Beyond Type Run is a part of the New York Road Runners Official Charity Partner Program, which gives organizations the opportunity to raise funds by offering guaranteed entry to the TCS New York City Marathon for athletes who fundraise on their behalf.
Beyond Type Run is made possible with support from Founding and Presenting Sponsor Dexcom and Presenting Sponsors Medtronic Diabetes and Novo Nordisk.
