Consumers for Dental Choice salutes new guidance from Florida: Stop placing mercury-based dental fillings

Consumers for Dental Choice and its dentist allies salute Florida Surgeon General JosephLadapo for urging a stop to dental amalgam in routine fillings “due to the risk of mercury exposure.” https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/FLDOH/bulletins/3ef6997

Although deceptively marketed as “silver,” dental amalgam is 50% mercury, a metal which is toxic to the brain. State Surgeon General Ladapo explains, “Amalgamreleaseslow levels of mercuryin the form of a vapor, which can be inhaled andabsorbed by the lungsandother organs, and has been found to causeDNA damagein human blood cells and potential impairment with renal [kidney] function.” Even more alarming, he notes that dental mercury can be linked to “delayed neurodevelopment in children” and higher mercury in breast milk.

“Florida is the first state to advise dentists to stop placing mercury-based fillings, but it won't be the last,” says Charlie Brown, Executive Director of Consumers for Dental Choice. “This pathbreaking action by Surgeon General Ladapo will lead to the phaseout of dental amalgam in Florida-and be a model for other states.”

Ladapo's action adds to the pressure on US HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy to end amalgam use in the US Indian Health Service and other federal agencies. The two have worked together for years; Kennedy wrote the foreword for a recent book written by Ladapo. On 6 May 2025, over 150 dental health professionals called on Kennedy to use “a stroke of the pen” to stop buying mercury fillings with taxpayer funds.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration too warns against amalgam use in a significant part of the population, notably children and women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy;. https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-issues-recommendations-certain-high-risk-groups-regarding-mercury-containing-dental-amalgam
