Initially developed for the City of Winnipeg, Upanup's innovative solution ensures municipal services and facilities are accessible and available to all residents
Upanup, specializing in digital website solutions that prioritize user experience, is pleased to announce the launch of its new Accessibility Disruption Tool (ADT).
Initially developed for the City of Winnipeg, it can be integrated within internal municipality data services to give residents access and updates for all services and facilities. The tool provides accessibility disruption notices relating to transportation, such as sidewalk repairs and bus route issues so citizens can plan around service disruptions and closures.
Upanup's Accessibility Disruption Tool gives residents the ability to filter notices by disruption category. For example: building accessibility, facility closures, transportation, pools, recreation, washroom and change rooms, etc., along with a searchable map with user zoom and drag controls for easy navigation.
Upanup developed a custom modular component to connect to a city's Drupal (i.e., open-source web content management system) website with the city's centralized data service. The solution required tools for website administrators to post custom accessibility disruption notices into the same searchable system for facilities, parks, pools, and other municipal locations.
A notification system to alert website administrators was also built-in so staff can react quickly when residents manually post disruption notices that require updating or archiving.
“Our Accessibility Disruption Tool allows for residents and city officials to easily work together to improve accessibility in their community,” said Peter Knapp, CEO of Upanup. “For example, not only do residents receive disruption alerts, but they can also be proactive and alert officials if they notice issues such as damaged steps, ramps or potholes.”
Unique Features Include:
— Integration with internal city data services.
— Advanced search and filtering options with custom address and facility lookups.
— Cross-entity relationships between disruption notices and facility nodes.
— Searchable map with advanced shapes and result list refreshing.
— Content administrative tools for precise mapping of locations.
— Comprehensive translation for official languages (English/French).
The initial launch with the City of Winnipeg has seen the tool averaging over 1,500 views per month since February 2025 and it is becoming a trusted source for city accessibility information.
“With the successful implementationhelping residents of Winnipeg, we'll now look to integrate our Accessibility Disruption Toolto help people in other municipalities across North America,” said Knapp.
