Rail Workers, Union Leaders, Elected Officials Shine Spotlight on Rail Safety
At 12 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, the Teamsters Rail Conference — comprised of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) and the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) — will host a rail safety town hall alongside other allied unions outside East Palestine, Ohio.

Tony Cardwell, President of the BMWED, will speak about the risks posed by railroads' attempt to bypass key safety regulations through “automated track inspection.” Vincent Verna, Vice President of the BLET, will discuss dangerous zero-to-zero technology that relies on computers to start and stop freight trains — removing the ability of locomotive engineers to operate them manually.
Held just miles from the site of one of the worst rail safety disasters in American history, the town hall will shine a spotlight on the ways in which railroads continue to endanger workers and communities.
