Insights from experts across the housing industry offer new HUD leadership a roadmap to unlock housing affordability for millions of Americans
Ivory Innovations, a nonprofit academic center based at the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business, today announced a new report that includes key recommendations for new Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) leadership to improve housing affordability in America. Researchers from Ivory Innovations gathered input from leaders spanning the housing sector to gain insights into how HUD's leadership could better support innovation in housing affordability, enhance financing options for consumers and improve efficiencies across the industry. Their insights were synthesized into seven clear, actionable recommendations for HUD leadership that, if implemented, will have a profound impact on addressing the U.S. housing affordability crisis.
“A major reason most Americans feel priced out of the housing market is due to outdated, fragmented and rigid regulatory policies that don't account for innovations in housing construction, design and financing,” said Kimberly Burnett, executive director, Ivory Innovations. “HUD is uniquely positioned to address these issues. The recommendations included in our report offer a blueprint for new HUD leadership to boldly wield its distinctive power by leveraging the tools it has at its disposal to unlock true access to housing affordability at scale.”
The Ivory Innovations report includes feedback from policymakers, developers, technologists and nonprofit leaders across the housing industry. Their recommendations range from modernizing HUD code to encompass all factory-built homes, to piloting new affordable homeownership financing tools, to supporting state and local zoning reforms to boost housing supply. The recommendations included in the report are all designed to encourage HUD to take a more proactive role in fostering innovation and provide much-needed action to improve the current state of the nation's housing crisis.
Ivory Innovations is both an academic center based at the University of Utah focused on research and innovation and an operating foundation that implements solutions in the field.
