Dr. David Washington, the author of the graphic novel,Black Defender: The Awakening was featured on the television show, BET Talks. The appearance focused not only on his graphic novel, but some of Washington's philosophy on success, the importance of representation in the media space, and the impact of his 27-year marriage on his growth.

Washington's graphic novel is about an African American entrepreneur and former Special Forces soldier, Dr. Chris Withers; who comes face-to-face with a system of injustice that drives him to vigilantism as Black Defender. Withers encounters supervillains, a corrupt police system, and social issues that stand in the way of him finding justice. This action-packed graphic novel includes a foreword written by martial arts legend and action film star, Billy Blanks.
