Thomas G. IsonPRESIDENTDr. Thomas G. Ison is in private practice in Newburgh, Ind. He received his dental degree and certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, Ky., and completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry. He previously held appointments as an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and Chief of Dentistry at Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American College of Dentists, as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He has completed the AAPD Leadership Institute at Kellogg and the Advanced Leadership at Wharton. He served as a consultant to the AAPD Council of Clinical Affairs, District III (now Southeastern) Trustee and is a Past President of the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry and Kentucky Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Ison has been an examiner for the ABPD Oral Clinical Exam as well as committee member and part leader for the Renewal of Certification Examination. He resides in Evansville, Ind., with his wife, Connie, and daughter, Maggie.
Carlos A. BertotPRESIDENT-ELECTDr. Carlos “Charlie” Bertot earned his dental degree from the University of Florida, College of Dentistry in 1992, and his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Kentucky, Albert B. Chandler Medical Center in 1994. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Bertot is a graduate of the AAPD Leadership Institute at the Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern University and the AAPD Advanced Leadership Institute at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Bertot has been involved with organized dentistry since his days in dental school. In addition to his membership and leadership service to multiple dental organizations, he is a past president of the Florida Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and has served AAPD at the council/committee and board level. A past Parliamentarian and Trustee for AAPD, Dr. Bertot is the managing partner of a busy pediatric dental practice in Maitland, Florida, a suburb of Orlando.
Together with his wife, he enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and staying fit. Dr. Bertot is most proud of his three children. His son is a dentist and physician, specializing in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. His oldest daughter is a physician specializing in ophthalmology, and his youngest daughter is a mental health counselor focused on youth and addictions.
Jacob K. LeeVICE PRESIDENTDr. Jacob Lee earned his DDS from the University of Toronto. He completed his dental internship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and earned his diploma in pediatric dentistry at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry.
Dr. Lee was an associate professor at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and was the director of the graduate program in pediatric dentistry at the University of Minnesota. He also served as chairperson of pediatric dentistry at the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco and as the dental director and the director of the USC pediatric dental residency program at the Children's Dental Health Clinic at Miller Children's Hospital, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Lee is an adjunct clinical associate professor at USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry. He has a keen interest in dental materials and has presented at numerous state, national, and international meetings.
Dr. Lee is a graduate of the AAPD Leadership and Advanced Leadership Institutes. He has served the AAPD on numerous committees and councils, including as a member of the editorial board of Pediatric Dentistry, as the chair of the Graduate Student Research Awards, and as coordinator of the academicians meeting at the AAPD Annual Session. In addition, he has organized and moderated the AAPD Practice Management Program. He co-chaired the Local Arrangements Committee of the 2022 AAPD Annual Sessions in San Diego. Dr. Lee has also served as president of the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry, as trustee of the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry, and as the AAPD Western District trustee. He is a Fellow of the AAPD, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He received the AAPD Merle C. Hunter Leadership Award in 2024.
As a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, Dr. Lee volunteers as an examiner for the Oral Clinical Examinations. He is also a speaker in the AAPD Speakers Bureau and an AAPD media spokesperson. Dr. Lee is engaged in private practice with his son, a pediatric dentist, in San Clemente and Rancho Mission Viejo, Calif. They are accomplished classical violinists and enjoy performing together.
Angela M. StoutSECRETARY-TREASURERDr. Angela M. Stout is a pediatric dentist in private practice in Erdenehim, Pa. as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University. She completed her dental degree in 1993 at Temple University School of Dentistry and a three-year pediatric dental residency at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1996. While teaching full-time at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Stout completed a master's degree in public health at University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. A passionate child advocate in the prevention of child abuse and neglect, she is the former Chair of the Pennsylvania Dental Association's P.A.N.D.A. (Prevent Abuse and Neglect through Dental Awareness) Coalition and is the lead participant on the team of trainers for the Pennsylvania Dental Association's child abuse license certification course. Dr. Stout is presently the dentist for the School District of Springfield Township. She holds offices and memberships in many professional, community, and academic organizations in addition to being on staff at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Saint Christopher's Hospital for Children, Jefferson Abington Hospital, Chestnut Hill Hospital, Temple University Hospital and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She lectures on numerous topics, as well as trains predoctoral students and postdoctoral residents.
Dr. Stout was named Philadelphia Magazine's Top Dentist in 2010 through 2024. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She is the past Parliamentarian for the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, past AAPD Northeast District Trustee, the Vice President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a member of the Advisory Board of PA AAP's Healthy Teeth Healthy Children, and a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. Dr. Stout is a graduate of the AAPD Foundation's Leadership Institutes of Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and Advanced Leadership Institute of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. She is the 2023 recipient of the AAPD Merle C. Hunter Leadership Award and the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry's Alumni Association Award for Education. Sarat “Bobby” ThikkurissyPARLIAMENTARIANDr. Bobby Thikkurissy, DDS, MS, MA is Professor at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Dr. Thikkurissy obtained his D.D.S. from New York University. He completed the program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD-1) at Wright Patterson and was active duty in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, including serving as chief of pediatric dentistry at Ramstein AFB in Germany. Dr. Thikkurissy obtained his certificate in pediatric dentistry/master's degree from The Ohio State University. He obtained a master's in English literature from Southern New Hampshire University in 2023. Dr. Thikkurissy is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, chair of the AAPD Committee on Sedation and Anesthesia, and AAPD representative on the ADA Committee on Dental Education and Licensure group on Sedation. Additionally, he has served on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Examination committee. In 2017, he was named the AAPD Pediatric Dentist of the Year and in 2019 was named the Aubrey Rose Foundation 'Above and Beyond Doctor' for his work with special needs populations. He has a joint academic appointment in the Division of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immune Deficiency. He has lectured nationally and internationally, and has published in the areas of morbidities, quality of life, and pain management in children. He is also co-editor of the textbook History and Physical for the Pediatric Dental Patient. Dr. Thikkurissy is married to Karin, has a son Robert and four pups – Wadsworth, Oliver, Theodore, and Cricket.
Sally Sue LombardiABPD DIRECTORA native Washingtonian, Dr. Sally Sue Lombardi completed her undergraduate and dental training at the University of Washington. She continued her residency training at the University of Washington, where she completed a clinical residency in general dentistry, followed by a master's degree and clinical residency in pediatric dentistry.
Dr. Lombardi's practice history is varied and diverse. Her experience ranges from just shy of 25 years of suburban private practice ownership to a current clinical care and teaching position in a community “safety net” clinic in central Seattle, the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic. She is an affiliate clinical instructor for the University of Washington School of Dentistry, an attending provider at Seattle Children's Hospital, and on the faculty for the General Practice Residency Program at Swedish Hospital in Seattle.
She earned her Diplomate status with American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in 2003. Dr. Lombardi has been an examiner for the Oral Clinical Examination (OCE) since 2014. She currently is a member of the Renewal of Certification Subcommittee, and priorly served on the Qualifying Examination Subcommittee. She's had the tremendous pleasure of serving as a mentor to new examiners and subcommittee members during their orientation period. In addition to her activities with the ABPD, Dr. Lombardi is a Fellow with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and is a founding member of the Pacific Northwest Pediatric Dentistry Study Club.
Dr. Lombardi is married and a proud mom of two young adults. For years, she drove the chauffeur/carpool circuit to school, sports, and other various activities her boys participated in, often praying that they would be on time, as well as having the necessary armamentarium for the activity scheduled in their possession. She has thoroughly enjoyed the relationships that develop from being involved in her kids' endeavors, and has taken on various roles of room mom, team mom, troop mom, and community volunteer over the years. She certainly understands the challenges of managing and juggling the demands of a busy family and a professional career. She applies that life experience when working with her patients, their parents, as well as her fellow colleagues to promote meaningful and effective relationships.
Elizabeth GosnellINTERNATIONAL TRUSTEEElizabeth “Liz” S. Gosnell, DMD, MS is a Professor at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, where she serves as the Division Director. After graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dentistry, she completed a pediatric dentistry residency at The Ohio State University/ Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. After her residency, she joined The Ohio State University/ Nationwide Children's Hospital faculty and was the Pre-Doctoral Director of Pediatric Dentistry for two years. She has been a faculty member at Cincinnati Children's Hospital for ten years, served as the Division Research Officer, and currently serves as the Craniofacial Team pediatric dentist. She is board-certified and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Gosnell has been involved in various ways in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. She has served as a member of the Special Healthcare Needs Committee and as a member of the Council on Clinical Affairs for eight years. She then became chair of the Special Healthcare Needs Committee. She was a member of the Evidence-Based Dentistry Committee and assisted in writing the Nonpharmacologic Behavior Guidance clinical practice guideline. She has been on the North Central Society of Pediatric Dentistry (NCSPD) executive committee and now serves as President. She is working with the AAPD Research & Policy Center on an advisory group for a transition care grant for adults with disabilities. She is the past recipient of the AAPD Suzi Seale Coll Evidence-Based Dentistry Service Award in 2021 and 2024. Gosnell is actively engaged in and committed to the AAPD's vision for optimal oral health for all children.
Dr. Gosnell is also active in organizations outside of AAPD. She is a member of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Qualifying Exam Committee; she is the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry College of Diplomates North Central Regional Director and is on the Pediatric Dentistry Journal Editorial Board.
Scott SchwartzNORTHCENTRAL DISTRICT TRUSTEEScott B. Schwartz, DDS, MPH is an Associate Professor at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, where he also serves as Director of the Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry training program. After graduating from the University of Illinois – Chicago College of Dentistry, he completed a General Practice Residency at The Ohio State University. Continuing his journey to the Southeast, he obtained a certificate in pediatric dentistry and a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Management at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Professionally, he has a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and has served on related committees with the American Dental Education Association, the Cincinnati Children's Graduate Medical Education DEI subcommittee, and written extensively about the topic in both editorial and research publications.
Dr. Schwartz has been highly involved with various arms of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry since residency, beginning with the Resident Committee, serving both as a member and the Chair. During his residency training, Dr. Schwartz was selected as the Samuel D. Harris Research and Policy Fellow, evaluating how pediatric dentists interfaced with the then newly implemented Affordable Care Act. After serving on the Committee on Early Career Pediatric Dentists, he became the Chair of this committee, leading efforts to recognize and support the largest and fastest-growing cohort of AAPD members. Whether sitting on committees such as the AAPD Foundation Grants and Programs Committee, leading residents at the Pediatric Oral Health Advocacy Conference (POHAC), or as a recently named Fellow of the Research and Policy Center, Dr. Schwartz is actively engaged in the future of this specialty and committed to the AAPD's mission of optimal oral health for all children.
Dr. Schwartz's involvement extends beyond the AAPD and includes service both within the state and the NorthCentral district. As a member of the Ohio Dental Association Medicaid Workgroup, Schwartz has an intimate understanding of state and local barriers to care, stakeholder engagement, and effectively leveraging team dynamics to achieve a common goal. Testifying at the Ohio Statehouse, Dr. Schwartz was instrumental in facilitating recent passage of increased dental Medicaid reimbursement. Furthermore, he spent four years on the Executive Committee of the NorthCentral Society of Pediatric Dentistry (NCSPD). One of his greatest achievements during his tenure as President was facilitating development of the Advocacy Fund to support residents, Public Policy Advocates, and NCSPD members to attend POHAC.
