Colorado has been chosen to host this year's Wild Horse Advocacy Conference, thanks to its strong, progressive leadership in protecting wild horses. Governor Jared Polis signed legislation proclaiming March asColorado Wild Horse Protection Month. The state is working towards developing lasting solutionsfor managing wild horse populations and has emerged as a national leader in humane and proactive wildlife management.. With its deep commitment to preservation and innovation, Colorado offers the perfect setting for this important gathering.

Accordingly, Governor Polis will be receiving the first Velma Bronn Johnston “Wild Horse Annie” Award; Johnston spearheaded a campaign to stop the eradication of mustangs and free-roaming burros from public lands. This led to the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.
