From selecting a research question and preparing a manuscript to navigating criticism during peer review, researchers must develop several skills to publish successfully. In the inaugural webinar fromPediatrics Open Science, the journal's Editor-in-Chief, Dr. John Patrick T. Co will share practical tips on designing impactful research projects and writing manuscripts like a seasoned professional.

Pediatrics Open Science,the first open-access journal from the American Academy of Pediatrics, will host its inaugural webinar on May 21, 2025, featuring the journal's Editor-in-Chief Dr. John Patrick T. Co, as the main speaker. In this session titled, “Tips for Starting and Publishing Research,”Dr. Co will share guidance on navigating scholarly publishing for early-career researchers and academics. Dr. Co is an Associate Professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Vice President at Mass General Brigham, a not-for-profit healthcare system involved in medical research, education, and patient care.

The webinar will explore key characteristics of impactful research questions and how researchers can select the right methods to answer them. Choosing the right research question in academic research is important for keeping research efforts on track and ensuring it receives maximum attention from publishers. Selecting the appropriate methods to answer research questions further reflects credibility of a submitted work and its authors.

Dr. Co also will break down the key components of a manuscript. He will guide attendees through writing each section of a manuscript to maximize impact, drawing on the “six habits of highly effective writers.” He also will address common reasons for manuscript rejection or revision and strategies for effectively responding to criticism from peer reviewers.

The webinar will provide guidance on submitting manuscripts to Pediatrics Open Science, the new journal from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Pediatrics Open Science is a fully open-access journal that publishes original research aimed at improving the health of children and families. The webinar marks an important step in the journal's efforts to expand its support for the research community. The journal is waiving article publishing charge for articles submitted through June 30, 2025.
